Author Interview with Katherine E. Soto

What is the first book that made you cry?

Some of the scenes in Little House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder had me tearing up.

What is your writing Kryptonite?

I have read a lot of old books, most written in an omniscient point of view. Today, head hopping is not very popular, and I find it difficult to see and remove from my own writing.

Who is one author are you friends with, and how do they help you become a better writer?

E.M.Swift-Hook is an indie author of scifi, and we have shared work to critique it. She has made some great suggestions that I have no doubt improve the readability of my work.

If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?

Write faster and ignore writing advice books. All writers need to develop their own style before writing tips can both make sense and be useful. Reading advice that is contrary to your own style can often halt writing altogether.

How did publishing your first book change your process of writing?

I try to keep my writing from A-Z, as moving things around and duplicate scenes are very trying to edit. Marketing has also cut down the amount of time and energy available for writing.

What was the best money you ever spent as a writer? If you have not made any money, dream about it?

Buying paperback copies – it’s always nice to have the evidence in your hands in a way ebooks cannot.

As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?

Since I am usually covered in cat hair, it would have to be a cat.

How many unpublished and half-finished books do you have?

About six or so, including some short story collections. I am planning to self publish over the next few years.

Have you read anything that made you think differently about fiction?

The sheer magic of Ray Bradbury, the excitement of RE Howard, the magic of Tolkien and Lewis – all these make me remember the power of words and to strive harder to improve mine.

How do you select the names of your characters?

I have a baby name book which I often use for secondary character names. Main characters I usually know their names from the start.

What is your favorite childhood book?

Too many to count! But some favourites are the Narnia series, ‘My Side of the Mountain’ by Jean Craighead George and ‘Have spacesuit, will travel’ by Robert Heinlein.

A portal closed for 2,000 years.

An ancient religion twisted by modern greed.

A love that crosses the centuries.

An ancient druid pendant shows archaeologist Janet visions of Roman soldier Trajan. The visions are of danger, death, and love—but are they a promise or a curse?

Her fiancé Daman abandons her before the wedding, her beloved museum is ransacked, and a robed man vanishes before her eyes. Haunted by visions of a time she knows long gone, Janet teeters on the edge of a breakdown.

In the shadow of Hadrian’s Wall and 2,000 years back in time, Janet’s past and present collide. Daman has vowed to drive the invaders from the shores of Britain and march his barbarian hordes to Rome. Trajan swears vengeance against the man who threatens both his loves—Janet and the Empire.

Time is running out—for everyone.
